Her sympathy has turned to malice, which she knows, which she deals with on a daily basis, so why should she feel worse just because she sees the effects reflected back in his eyes? Their decade together will end. It’s just that simple. Rational people didn’t keep relitigating the basics: heliocentrism, gravity, the fossil record. She’s in the library, where a woman about her age is standing a few feet away bear-hugging a stack of books. The top book in the stack is starting to slide, and she looks away from the woman, happy in the knowledge that more will follow.
