THE SCIENCE FRIENDS

He was the package and she was the gift. He was the water glass and she was the tap. He was the parking space and she was the vehicle consenting to brake to a stop. She had the lion’s share of the passion and power. He furnished containment. Together they made not a romantic couple — he scoffed at this before she could — but a research team dedicated to devising a system for recording and transmitting important data on dynamic events during weapons detonation using proton radiography. None of this meant that he didn’t carry a torch for her, or that she wasn’t fully aware of said torch. She liked the heat of the flame and his refused to show it. But on they went, working side by side, days spent among the 800-MeV proton linac, the proton storage ring, and various other facilities for isotope production, proton radiography, and ultra-cold neutrons.
