What was the plan? Was she intending to change a mind? Reset an institutional priority? Did she want to burn down the goddamned henhouse, as her grandfather used to say, though when he said it he was talking about an actual henhouse, the one out back, which he had no intention of ever burning down, as it was both a source of income and an object of love, and in the summers she spent there he taught her so much and so well about the bond between people and animals that she also understood, all at once, the intricacies of the bonds between people? No. She did not want to burn down the hen- or any other house. She wanted only to use language powerfully and originally, in a way that called the rest of the birds down from the sky. They would want to listen. She would want them to listen. Oh, and she wanted to foul the food of the evil so that they were taken from the earth. That was the plan.
