PATIENCE

“Imagine the arrogance,” he said, “of believing that the things we value now will last, when most of the history of our nation, our society, our planet, even, is a history of revaluing, of admitting with sheepish smiles that we got it wrong, that the book or movie that we knew would represent us faded away while the book or movie we dismissed showed a strange tenacity, not the first year, not the second, but maybe the fifth or the tenth, until it became a signal work in helping us to understand ourselves.” The woman in the next seat turned to face him. “This is a doctor’s waiting room,” she said. “Can you shut up?”
